Library

  • All Hawthorne students pre-k thru 6th grade may have 2 books checked out at a time. Preschool students bring their books home in hanging bags. These bags are the property of Hawthorne Elementary and need to be returned each week with the books.Students may renew books until they finish them as long as they bring them with them to the library. We do not renew books that are not with the students, these are counted as overdue.

Each week when students come in they are expected to participate in the library by checking out and reading books. Students who participate and are current are allowed to enjoy our art station, Library Mouse station, Keva planks, or play a game of chess.

We do not charge late fees, however, late book notices are sent home with students who have missing books each week. After the book is over 3 weeks late a letter is added with payment or replacement options for lost or ruined books. Students may pay the replacement fee or purchase a replacement copy. If payment is not possible they may choose to work off the price of the book during recesses in the library, classroom, or office. The number of recesses required will depend on the cost of the books lost. This can be arranged through Mrs. Allen or Ms. Harvey if Mrs. Allen is not in.  Our final payment option is to bring in unexpired nonperishable food items that will then be donated to the food bank. Each canned item is counted as $.50 towards the lost book fee. After paying or working off fees students who repeatedly lose or ruin books will be asked to keep their library books at school to be read in class.
